e-VOTE is an IST (Information Society Technology) research and development project. The project officially started on September 1, 2001 and will last for 30 months.

e-VOTE aims to design, implement and validate an Internet Based Electronic Voting System that will support voters' registration, validation of their credentials, collection of the voted ballots and automatic calculation of the final vote tally. The system will support, in a user-friendly and co-operative manner, all involved "actors" (process organisers, administrators, party representatives and voters) through conventional WWW browsers and will be applicable to local, regional, national or European level.
